Our History

In January 1907, a letter in the Western Daily Mercury lamented that Plymouth — alone among Britain's great towns — had no bowling green of its own. Within months a group of enthusiasts had set out to change that, and Plymouth (Sir Francis Drake) Bowling Club was born. More than a century later, we're still playing — on our own green at Whiteford Road, where the club has been settled since 1922.
